Skin Biopsy

In this test, a small sample of tissue is taken. This is known as a biopsy. There are 3 types of skin biopsies:

1. PUNCH BIOPSY (the suspected area is removed with a skin punch)

2. SHAVE BIOPSY (a thin layer of the lesion is removed)

3. EXCISIONAL BIOPSY (total removal of lesions that appear to be cancerous and that have a high likelihood of requiring eventual removal)

The skin biopsy is performed to rule out the possible presence of a skin cancer. Any mole or lesion that is new, changes size, shape, color, or bleeds, may require biopsy. Skin biopsies are performed under local anesthesia.

***** REMEMBER *****

1. The skin biopsy is a useful test with a very low incidence of infection or bleeding from the site.

2. There is a potential for keloid scar, if the patient is predisposed to this problem.
