Abdominal UltrasoundThe abdominal ultrasound study (sonogram) makes use of high frequency sound waves to produce an image, representative of the anatomy inside the abdomen. An aqueous gel is spread over the skin in the area to be studied. A hand held transducer is then used, which emits high frequency sound waves and collects the reflections from the internal organs. The transducer is passed painlessly over the surface of the abdomen. The computer assimilates this information into a "picture" on a video screen and is simultaneously recorded on film. The most commonly studied organs are: gallbladder, kidney, aorta, and pancreas. This test is also useful in the evaluation of patients with abdominal pain, abdominal masses, or jaundice.
